Company Overview

The Virginia Department of Forestry protects and develops healthy, sustainable forest resources for Virginians. Our agency is 98 years old and has 243 employees stationed throughout Virginia. Our services include: providing advice to landowner's on land management practices; protecting forests from fire; suppressing wildland fires; monitoring water quality at logging sites; monitoring forest health issues; supporting conservation and protection of critical areas; growing seedlings for reforestation efforts; coordinating and monitoring tree planting; managing state-owned forest land; educating citizens on forestry issues; and participating in the Forest Inventory Analysis.

Benefits

Annual Leave: Employees with up to 5 years of service receive a total of 96 hours of annual leave each calendar year. Annual leave is accrued at the rate of 4 hours per pay period and begins accumulating with the employee’s first paycheck.

Holidays: Employees are given 12 paid holidays each calendar year. The holidays include: New Year’s Day; Lee-Jackson Day; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; President’s Day; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Columbus Day; Veteran’s Day; Thanksgiving and the day after; and Christmas Day.

Virginia Sickness and Disability Program: This program provides up to 10 days of sick leave and up to five days of family and personal leave per year for employees with up to five years of service. It also provides income replacement due to short- and/or long-term disabilities.

Health Insurance: Two health insurance plans are available for employees – COVA Care and COVA HDHP. They are both administered by Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Group Life Insurance: Employees receive two times their salary in term life insurance without cost to them. Each employee has the option to purchase additional life insurance to cover himself/herself, his/her spouse, and his/her children.

Retirement Benefits: Employees receive retirement benefits through the Virginia Retirement System. It is a defined benefit plan and the state makes both the employer and employee contribution.

Deferred Compensation Plan: Employees may participate in a voluntary retirement savings program to supplement their Virginia Retirement System benefits. It is a defined contribution plan and includes a cash match program.
