Company Profile
Umpqua Community College
Company Overview
Umpqua Community College was established by a vote of greater Douglas County residents in 1964 and, for the first few years, conducted classes in various rented facilities in Roseburg. Since its founding as a post-secondary education facility, UCC has grown and changed to meet the diverse needs of the community. In 2014-15 more than 14,000 students took one or more classes each year, for a full-time equivalent (FTE) of about 3,100 full-time students.
UCC is one of the most picturesque colleges in the country, nestled between beautiful tree-studded hills and overlooking a large bend in the North Umpqua River. Natural volcanic rock and rustic, cedar shake architecture grace the 17 campus buildings located on a 100-acre plot of land six miles north of Roseburg. Easy access to Interstate 5 and mild year-around temperatures complement the scenic beauty of the campus.
Company History
In the late 1950s, interested community members formed a committee, sponsored by the American Association of University Women, to explore the idea of establishing a community college in Douglas County.
The first college courses were offered in 1961. Classes were first held in rented facilities in Roseburg. The cost was $5 per term and $11 per Credit.
After meeting the legal requirements for forming a college district, the Oregon State Board of Higher Education ordered establishment of the proposed district on December 11, 1962. Voters supported formation of the district by voting 3,190 "yes" and 825 "no" on March 30, 1964. The same election also established the first seven-member board of Directors. At the first board meeting on April 2, 1964, Ralph Snyder was appointed registrar and Harry Jacoby was hired as the first president of the college.
Today, UCC has 17 campus buildings located on a 100-acre plot of land offering a wide variety of Certificate programs, Associate degree programs, Transfer degree programs and Technical degree programs. We house many state-of-the-art facilities including Nursing, Welding, Viticulture, and Automotive programs. Many of our students transfer to 4 year universities to continue their studies. We have a partnership with Oregon State University to provide top-notch Forestry transfer degrees so that our students can hit the university grounds running!
