US Forestry Intern – Tumwater, WA

Temporary/Full-time/Non-Exempt
The US Forestry Intern will learn from foresters and team members across multiple departments and assist with a variety of projects. The intern will be exposed to multiple forestry related disciplines within the company including operations, silviculture, technology, and wildlife. Our desire for our interns is for you to complete meaningful work, to be able to apply learnings in a real-world environment, and for you to leave the internship trained in foundational areas of forestry with exposure to multiple parts of forestry operations.

Port Blakely manages forestlands in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and New Zealand.
What you’ll do:
- Work with members of our operations team to accomplish tasks such as: harvest unit and road layout, permitting, contractor compliance/quality control visits on active harvesting and/or road maintenance/construction projects.
- Work with members of our resources team to do: spraying projects, plantation evaluations, pre-commercial thinning (PCT) and hardwood slashing, cruising and cruise projects, permanent plot installation, GPS data collection, and forest data requestions (including GIS).
- Work with members of our wildlife and environmental education team to accomplish tasks such as: resource classification and mapping, compliance and effectiveness monitoring, and environmental education trail work, tour set up, and program delivery.
- May perform short duration miscellaneous assignments.
Some travel to Oregon may be included during the internship.
Requirements
We’d love to hear from people with:
- Proficiency in basic forestry navigation (compass, pacing), use of basic forestry tools (Relaskop, prism, clinometer, Spencer tape, range-finder), reading and navigating with a map, photo interpretation and able to work alone on specific assignments.
- Experience with hand-held GPS devices is a plus.
- Current enrollment ina degree program forforestry, natural resources, or other related fields.
